Are Nail Extensions Permissible in Islam?
Shaykh Abdul-Azīz ibn Bāz
Question: What is the ruling on nail extensions, bearing in mind that I strive to never let any men see them. And does that enter into the ruling of Al-Wāsilah (i.e., using hair extensions) which has come within the Hadīth?
Answer: Nail extensions have no basis and it is not permissible to use nail extensions. Rather, it is obligatory and the Sunnah to shorten and clip them at least (every) forty nights. Anas, may Allāh be pleased with him, said: “We were given a time period for trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hairs, and shaving the pubic hairs, that we should not leave this for more than forty nights.” In another wording: “The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ demarcated for us…”
Therefore, the man and the woman are both commanded to clip the nails at least (every) forty nights. So how can she have (long) nails? This is a Munkar, and has no basis.
